Slot Canyons! Wirepass to Buckskin Gulch day hike.

Let me just say, this hike is absolutely one of my favorites to date! As a solo female hiker, I find immense joy in exploring rocky terrains and wandering through serene slot canyons for miles. To begin my adventure, I started my day in Page, AZ and drove for approximately one hour to reach the Wire Pass trailhead. Keep in mind that the trailhead is accessible via a dirt road, but it becomes impassable when wet. When dry, however, most vehicles can make their way to the trailhead without any issues.

Please note that there is a $6 fee per person, which I highly recommend purchasing online in advance before leaving Page. At the trailhead, you’ll need to sign in and out, providing details about your vehicle and an emergency contact. It’s crucial to prioritize safety when hiking, particularly in slot canyons, as they are prone to flash flooding. Unfortunately, there have been multiple fatalities this year related to hiking in this area. Therefore, ensuring your safety is of utmost importance. Remember to check the weather not only in the immediate vicinity but also all the way to Bryce Canyon, as the water shed for this area is extensive. Additionally, it’s a good idea to stop and have a chat with the park ranger to inquire about current conditions.

The hike begins with approximately one mile of walking in a wash until you reach Wire Pass. Wire Pass is a narrow and winding slot canyon adorned with majestic sandstone walls sculpted by erosion. Along the way, you’ll encounter a few obstacles, including climbing over a log and navigating a 13-foot drop. Thanks to the volunteers, a ladder has been placed to assist hikers at the drop. Once you exit Wire Pass, you’ll find yourself in Buckskin Gulch. This extraordinary natural wonder is one of the longest and deepest slot canyons in the world! At this point, you have the option to go right or left. I personally chose to go right first, and it was truly extraordinary. The canyon narrows, and the towering walls create a peaceful ambiance. During this section of my hike, I only encountered one other person, allowing me to fully immerse myself in the awe-inspiring beauty of nature. Although I didn’t come across significant water, it’s important to note that there is often water present, and it can become quite deep. After hiking a few miles, I turned around and headed left. As I ventured to the left side of Buckskin Gulch, the canyon walls started to widen, revealing a breathtaking red hue. Personally, I preferred hiking towards the Paria River by going right.

This hike is truly unforgettable, and I already have plans to return. My ultimate goal is to complete a through hike of Buckskin Gulch, which requires extensive preparation and obtaining permits to camp within the canyon.

Always prioritize safety during your hikes! Remember to check the weather, inform someone about your plans and whereabouts, and ensure you have enough water. And most importantly, practice Leave No Trace principles! Happy hiking, my fellow adventurers! I sincerely hope you get the opportunity to experience the enchantment of Wire Pass and Buckskin Gulch.
